The New Physics of Lenses

My early interests were lenses in telescopes and microscopes.  Even made a few telescope lenses I can still use today.   These new approaches are interesting.  Article includes a descriptive image of the idea and their uses.

Physicists Are Reinventing the Lens, and Imaging Will Never Be the Same
“Metalenses” created with photolithography could change the nature of imaging and optical processing.    by Emerging Technology from the arXiv

" .... Now lenses are being reinvented by the process of photolithography, which carves subwavelength features onto flat sheets of glass. Today, Alan She and pals at Harvard University in Massachusetts show how to arrange these features in ways that scatter light with greater control than has ever been possible. They say the resulting “metalenses” are set to revolutionize imaging and usher in a new era of optical processing.  ....  "
